All tourism will have a big effect on local communities. This effect could be positive and negative and it is our duty to ensure that we keep the negative effects to a minimum.
One key thought before deciding on a destination and to take with you on any trip is that tourism should never disrespect or exploit local cultures. If you want to take your home lifestyle with you it is important that you consider what type of trip you are looking for. ITS provide a variety of trips and destinations to choose from to gain different experiences.
When visiting you chosen destination there are some basic ‘tips’ to follow that will make your trip a memorable experience and will make the best impact on the people and places you visit:
• Visit a local school or orphanage – make someone’s day!
• Take photos with care – always ask
• Dispose of waste properly – wrappers, toilet waste, food
• Buy gifts locally – have a go at haggling
• Respect water and try not to waste – reduce the use of plastic bottles – use one
container
• Take photos and leave only footprints when on trails and stick to the path
• Interact with locals and your guides – you will learn a great deal about them and
their country – ask questions
• Be sure to avoid buying any products that exploit the wildlife and aid destruction
of the habitat
• Have fun and gain an experience of a lifetime!
• Research about your destination – the geography, climate,
political history and current
• Learn a few words and phrases of the language
• Learn about the cultural differences and respect them: how
to wear clothing, greetings, religion
• Take some gifts – pencils, crayons, postcards of your home
country which can be given to children on trek routes, in
orphanages or school.
• Provide feedback about your trip
• Send pictures or gifts to the people if you promised to do
this
• Donate to a local project near to where you visited
• Share your memories and experiences and plan your next
trip!
